Simple Invitation Etiquette

Whether it is to a wedding, a dinner party, shower or gala event, an invitation comes with some important obligations. Here’s a quick guide to keep you on the guest list.

1. RSVP

From the French, it means “Répondez, s’il vous plaît,” or, “Please reply.” This little code has been around for a long time and it’s definitely telling you that your hosts want to know if you are attending. Reply promptly, within a day or two of receiving an invitation.

2. How do I respond? Reply in the manner indicated on the invitation.

  • RSVP and no response card: a handwritten response to the host at the return address on the envelope.
  • Response Card: fill in and reply by the date indicated and return in the enclosed envelope.
  • RSVP with phone number: telephone and make sure to speak in person – answering machines can be unreliable.
  • RSVP with email: you may accept or decline electronically.
  • Regrets only: reply only if you cannot attend. If your host doesn’t hear from you, he is expecting you!
  • No reply requested? Unusual, but it is always polite to let someone know your intentions. A phone call would be sufficient.

3. Is that your final answer?

  • Changing a ‘yes’ to a ‘no’ is only acceptable on account of: illness or injury, a death in the family or an unavoidable professional or business conflict. Call your hosts immediately.
  • Canceling because you have a “better” offer is a sure fire way to get dropped from ALL the guest lists.
  • Being a “no show” is unacceptable.
  • Changing a ‘no’ to a ‘yes’ is OK only if it will not upset the hosts’ arrangements.

4. “May I bring…”

Don’t even ask! An invitation is extended to the people the hosts want to invite—and no one else.
  • …a date. Some invitations indicate that you may invite a guest or date (Mr. John Evans and Guest) and when you reply, you should indicate whether you are bringing someone, and convey their name.
  • …my children. If they were invited, the invitation would have said so.
  • … my houseguest. It’s best to decline the invitation, stating the reason. This gives your host the option to extend the invitation to your guests, or not.

5. Say “Thank You.”

Make sure to thank your hosts before you leave, and then again by phone or note soon after

Wedding Stationery Time line from Sarka at Citrus Press Co.

Wedding season is nearing so it's best to start your planning, giving yourself plenty of time to get organized and to keep track of all the processes when it comes to your wedding stationery.

I know that there are many steps to the process and many pieces to keep in mind when thinking of your wedding stationery. There are save the dates, invitations, enclosures, menus, programs and thank you cards etc. It can get overwhelming. So I’ve put together this wedding stationery timeline that will hopefully make it easier for you to plan your wedding stationery. A couple of big questions I always get are ‘When do I send everything out?’ and ‘What do I write on my wedding invitation?’ So, I’m excited to share this fabulous and fun timeline that you should totally print out and keep in your back pocket. How helpful is that?!

Next week: invitation wording tips, I'll tackle the ‘What do I write on my wedding invitation?’!

Thank you cards - DO IT YOURSELF STYLE!

In the shop you'll be seeing more 'Instant Download' DIY templates. I created these with the idea that they would be easy for anyone to download and put together in a jiffy. Having these template files in my shop saves everyone time and gives you your files instantly! No waiting on a shipment and it's environmentally friendly too :)

I've designed this step-by step how to. In this I explain some optional tools you can use to create this yourself at home!

This design is quite timeless and suitable for any occasion whether it's a wedding, bridal shower, baby shower or just a simple every day Thank You note, this lovely generic design covers all the bases.

I'm going to share one design with you, however there are more options in my shop!

T H E   D E T A I L S

Final size: Thank You trim size 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 (folded)
Paper size: requirement is 8.5x11 (US paper)
Qty: 2 per page, print 100% not 'fit to page'
Trim marks: Provided
Col: Black lettering on white (white paper)
Suggestion: To add color, you can print this file onto a light colored paper if you do not want a black and white look
Envelope requirement: A2 Envelopes 4 3/8 x 5 3/4
Recommended Tools: Cutting Mat, ruler, X-acto knife, scoring tool
Note: Watermarks will not be on download file

T H E   S T E P S

Download your file and print. I recommend printing on 80lb-110lb  card stock. You can use lovely matte paper, metallic, kraft, or even colored card stock. These are best printed with a laser printer. You can also take this file to your local kinkos, staples, office depot etc....don't forget to print extras.

Have your tools ready, you'll need a cutting mat, a scoring knife or even a spoon to use for scoring. You can use the rounded part of the spoon to score your paper. It's curved and 'soft' enough that it doesn't rip or tear the paper. My university Art Professor taught us that trick! You may need to print a few sheets to master the use of a spoon - but it works!

- score across your print out - 1 at a time

Take your cutting mat with your knife and ruler. I prefer the metal ruler with the cork (for grip).
Cut down the middle of your card. Do this to all your sheets.

Now you're ready to fold and write your thank you's...told you it was easy! Make sure to find  lovely A2 envelopes to compliment your card.  And if you're handwriting these too make sure to have a few spare ones to compensate for any errors.

And for a limited time, here's a coupon code to receive 15% off this template! Use coupon code
CITRUSPRESS15 - expires Oct/31/13

What to include in your wedding program?

Including a wedding program for your guests is a thoughtful detail that helps guests follow along with your ceremony, especially if there are traditions that may not be so familiar. Whether they are curious as to the name of your wedding song, or the name of your maid of honor, a wedding program will let your guests feel more engaged with the ceremony. It’s also a great way to extend your thanks to those who made this day possible and is a great keepsake for those guests who love weddings!

Not sure what to include in your program? No worries, we’ve listed here some suggested items you may want to include:

  • Choose a Wedding Program design to coordinate with your wedding stationery. Be sure to start the program with the Bride and Grooms Names (perhaps using a design or  monogram from your invitations), wedding date and city, state (optional)
  • Choose your preferred layout, is it Tea Length (long style) or booklet style, more traditional
  •  List the order of events of the ceremony.
  • Remember to include the Officiates name
  • Musical selections song name/singer (you may also choose to include lyrics if meaningful to you)
  • Readings and the names of those the readers. For example: - Processional – Wedding March by Wagner
    - The Officiate’s Greeting – Mike Smith, friend of bride and groom
    - Solo by Sara Knight – You light up my life
    - Exchanging of Vows & Ring Ceremony
    - Pronouncement of Marriage
    - Recessional Music – March Triumphant - Sassmannshausen

  • For those who have a religious wedding ceremony, it would be helpful to include a brief explanation of any traditions, rituals, and ethnic customs that will be occurring during the ceremony so that your guests will be able to be in the know.
  • A list of the members of your wedding entourage. This would include the Mothers and Fathers of the Bride and Groom, Maid of Honor and Bridesmaids, Best Man and Groomsmen, Ringer bearers and Flower girls etc
  • Thank you note to parents, guests and any special intentions or memorials for those who are not able to be present.

Again, this is your day so feel free to go a step further and personalize your wedding ceremony programs a little more by adding a photo or special quote. If information gets to be too much for the front, we do offer backside printing our programs as well. The day of your ceremony, you may either place them at each guests seat or have a designated friend or family member be in charge of greeting and handing the programs to the guests. We recommend checking out our collection of wedding programs to get an idea of different layout options.

Result! DIY programs at their best

Last year I had the opportunity to work with Camie on her wedding sets and reception pieces. She just sent me this lovely photo of her Tea Length (double-sided) Block Text Wedding Ceremony Programs that are available in my shop. She printed them out herself, and she also punched and finished them off with ribbon. Something I never thought of doing. I think they look amazing.

Latest invitation designs

So I've been a pretty busy bee lately. Wedding season is certainly upon my little Citrus Press Co. shop and I have to admit it's really hard to stay on top of blogging, tweeting, working, sourcing, planning, bookeeping, cooking, cleaning....oh, and sleeping!

However, I've still managed to get some new designs in. I have (I'm thinking off the top of my head here) about 20-25 designs that aren't completed, and then I have loads just swimming around in my head. So I'm trying to make it a goal to at least finish the invite design and post them and then add the rest of the pieces in a few days. This way I know I have to complete the task at hand.

Here are a few new pieces in the shop! Some are whimsical, folk, floral, lace, chalkboard and some I've rehashed because of client input - which I love! I'm lovin watercolor right now as well, and I have painted and designed a few options so look out for those as well...as they say, watch this space, there's more to come.

Is there anything that you want to see? Just let me know!
